↓↓↓

And there are several real places for major improvement:

(1)It was not always clear what problem the research was addressing.

(2)Most presentations mentioned searching online for information as a major part of the work. Really, the fact that it is online or not is inconsequential. The point is to cite the sources that matter and to realize that this background information is essential to develop the research idea, but that it is not the research itself. The point of science is doing an experiment where the data is not available. People need to cite references, not places (you do not cite a library where you got a book, you cite the book). It is also important to point out that the resources that exist do not answer the question you have and why that question is important.

(3)There was without exception no clear mention of an expectation or hypothesis about the research.

(4)The attention on filming was to the detriment of science. Most work was poorly replicated and the experiments needed better designs.

The consequence of these shortfalls makes it hard to draw definitive conclusions about the test that were run. More importantly, teams usually overstretched their findings to assume that a dominant behavior was apparent. Almost every study would be improved with mention of statistics of the findings, and study limitations related to study size, design etc. Think critically about your work.

I have benefited a lot from participating in this International Youth Science Video Fair.

I learned how to use the camera to shoot, how to edit and and how to record voice overs. I am very fortunate to use this opportunity to explore nature, and capture the magnificent and beauty of nature with my lens.

Since our topic is the Myrmarachne, we have carried out many experiments and studies on Myrmarachne, such as: analyzing the difference between ants and Myrmarachne, studying the feeding habits of Myrmarachne, the purpose of Myrmarachne blending into the ant army, and the breastfeeding behavior of female Myrmarachne. After the film was made, I learned more about this creature through in-depth research and all the conducted experiments.

This competition has made me braver. I used to panic at the sight of a tiny flying insect, but now I am so fearless of most insects that I can spend the night in the same room with fruit flies.

I would like to thank our team members and two teachers very much. Only by brainstorming together, and each of us doing his or her own part, can we complete the production of the film. Without the help of each and every one of you, we certainly would not have this final result.

All in all, this summer camp not only allowed me to learn a lot of knowledge that I had not been exposed to before, but also learned how to overcome my fear of insects and how to cooperate effectively with team members, and I grew a lot from it. It was a very unforgettable experience that left a deep impression on me. It is my great honor to contribute to our team, and I hope I can continue to grow with the knowledge I have learned.

I have benefited a lot from this International Youth Science Video Fair.

In the process of making the film, I learned how to edit, how to record voice overs, and how to shoot with a 4k camera.

I felt nervous and grateful about this competition. I am grateful to be able to participate in this competition, but at the same time, I am also a little nervous about our results after the competition.

I really want to thank my two tutors, because they always try their best to help us when we are desperate. For example: went we don’t know what the ant-spider eats, one of our tutors bravely found a trash bin full of fruit flies and we finally could continue with our experiments.

I also want to thank my team members. My team members have always been very kind to me. They also helped me, guided me, and took care of me when I needed help. This experience helped me learn a lot about ant spiders, and I also learned what unity and friendship are.

This experience is very unforgettable, I will continue to work hard and continue to grow!

One question that resonated with me the most is when a professor asked me “what would happen if the yellow Nephila Pilipes lived in a place where it was near a hornets nest and birds could fly in and out.” I am still thinking about this question till today, so far my answer would still be that the birds and the yellow Nephila Pilipes would flourish, as the dozens of birds would come to hunt the hornets every day, whilst the hornets only food source, the yellow Nephila Pilipes only shed their skins when they need to grow, which isn't that common. In the end, the Nephila Pilipes would flourish and grow as the birds would fly away if there isn't enough food, the hornets would be hunted down by the birds and the Nephila Pilipes would be the only survivor since it would eat the bugs around it and it doesnt shed skin that often.

The announcement of a questioning session came as a surprise to me as I was not aware of the sessions until a few days before the initial meeting. Despite this short warning, I was not nervous or anxious for the first session and created a list of some possible questions along with suitable responses if such questions were raised. The first session went smoothly but I was not able to answer as many questions as I had hoped. For the second interview, I was less worried about the interview itself but rather if I could make it in time. This was because the timing of the meeting was rather inconvenient as I was in school and had an exam before and after the meeting. I felt like the questions were rather shallow and were not very developed, these closed questions allowed for us to easily respond to them with little difficulty. All in all, it was a new and interesting experience for me.

The interview process of this competition allowed me to gain deep insight into future paths that I could go on to bring my project to a deeper level. Professor Benjamin Bostick from round 2 brought up the question of if there was a concrete way to find out how the wasps, Vespa Velutina, were really dying — was it really through heat and asphyxia or another hidden factor? The judges were able to raise questions that our team had not thought of and bring various perspectives to our group’s project. Furthermore, I think the interviewing process was a rare opportunity for me to be able to receive feedback and constructive criticism of our project from the field’s top experts, which also allowed me to think more critically about certain aspects of my project from a new perspective.

After the fruitful experience, I learned much more about carnivorous plants. I also learned to cooperate with my teammates. I feel fulfilled by this experience. I am also happy and proud that we completed the video shoots in 5 days and passed the Chinese round Q&A, as Chinese is not our stronger language.

Image 1

I think the second round went much smoother than the first, especially in a sense that it was easier for me to explain a lot of details about our project in depth. For example, I successfully explained what our group’s next steps would be in regards to our on going project, as well as how our group came to form a logical hypothesis on why this is happening. Overall, this was an enjoyable experience and through receiving feedback from the judges, our group is clear on which aspects we need to change or improve on moving forward, and what we are doing well.

I personally think that the second round of the Q.A session went quite well and we worked pretty well as a team to answer the questions. Although there was a question that I misunderstood but the judge explained and gave great constructive criticism that we didn’t think about before. All the judges gave us great feedback on the aspects we need to work on that will greatly improve our project from the respective aspects. We mainly need to work on our data and DNA analysis on confirming our findings and the judges were all very carefully watching our video and giving feedback. I’m proud of our team’s work and effort and we will continue to work on the criticized aspects.
